If you have been into Spin Zone in the past month, you've noticed we have been doing some facelift to the shop in two ways, first we have moved our GURU Fit system. We now have a designated fit studio equipped with all of the bells and whistles, from any saddle you'd like to try to getting the right stem length and handlebar width. You'll love the new experience in it's own space and not having to be in the middle of the shop anymore.
Second facelift you may be noticing is new products and brands, we have been looking over all different brands that seem to be the up and coming new and we feel we have found said brands. You may see some of the brands you have come to love not be as available on demand at the shop, but most things we can still get and or help with. We feel though that the new brands we are bring in and taking place of older brands we've had for awhile, you will come to know and love just as well. As always with these transitions we appreciate you all as customers and working with and around us as we are in these transition phases of new products and new experiences, all to make your journey on that bike just a little more enjoyable! Please stop in to check out what's new, and see the new space, we look forward to working and helping you take the next pedal stroke forward.
July’s Tour de France brings out the inner bike in many. Then there are those who live their own tour, in their own way. John Boughton, of South Bend, keeps a yearly goal of logging at least 10,000 miles – yes, an average of 27.4 miles a day! Some might call that kind of mileage crazy, but for John, it’s just a lifestyle.
At 7, John remembers his first bike as frustrating – because he didn’t know how to repair the flat tire. At 12, he discovered the joys and freedom of riding eight miles to the next town over. By adulthood, he was a bike-to-work commuter and took care of as many errands on his bike as he could.
In 2004, John started feeling the stresses of work and began searching for a way to combat that stress. Instead of working through his lunch break as he often did, he made lunch time ride time. And that’s when the miles started adding up.
At first, John’s lunchtime outings had no destination in mind, “Other than exploring the countryside not far from us,” said John, inventory manager at LaSalle Company in South Bend.
“Then, I started setting mileage goals. Initially I wondered if I could average 15 miles a day for a year.” He took care of that goal in 2005, and raised it to 18 for 2006. “Then, I wondered if weather needed to be a limiting factor, so I made it my goal for 2007 to ride outdoors every day of the year. It was a bit of a challenge when I had two outpatient surgeries, but I did it.”
John pushed himself to beat each year’s previous mileage, until reaching 13,000 miles in 2012. “It had become a good habit, so I was able to ride every day for 57 months,” John explained about some of his riding accomplishments.
Today, John has “scaled down” his cycling to 10,000 miles a year and is content with that goal. Most cyclists won’t near logging this many miles – which takes commitments to commuting and even family biking vacations such as the week-long Great Ohio Bicycle Adventure -- but they can still gleen the benefits of commuting and riding.
John Boughton’s advice: “Just do it . . . .Once you see how much fun and de-stressing it is, you can push your personal limits on temperature or rain.” And remember, he adds, “The ‘fun’ of the toughest rides comes more when they are accomplished.”
He goes on to say, “Pick a pleasant day, look for a route without a lot of traffic and allow yourself enough time to enjoy the ride.” Wear comfortable, colorful clothes, he said, and on the practical side, “Keep a set of work clothes at work so you can change into them in case you get wet or sweaty.”
“I believe that if more Americans rode bikes instead of cars, we all would be healthier, our money could go into better things, we would have more happiness and social connectedness, and our collective carbon footprint would be significantly reduced.”
Coming from the guy who puts more mileage on his bikes than he does his car in a year, how can it hurt to “just do it.”

Welcome to Spin Zone's first blog. As a mass of passionate (or mildly obsessed) cyclist and triathletes, we have decided to put a blog together of our wisdom, random thoughts, advice, reviews, or anything else that has to do with cycling and triathlon in a condensed little space in the internet world.
We are wanting to know what our followers would like to learn about, read about, or just are generally interested in! We will be doing product reviews etc, but we would like to know what YOU want to learn more about.
